FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about our Precision hreflang plugin
What does the Precision Hreflang plugin do for international SEO?
The Precision Hreflang plugin helps search engines understand which language and regional version of your content to show to users, a critical part of international SEO.
If your site serves the same language across multiple regions – like en-US, en-GB, en-IE, or en-IN – search engines can easily prioritise one version and ignore the others. Without correctly implemented hreflang tags, your localised content may not appear in the right regional search results.
This plugin simplifies the process of managing hreflang tags across your site, ensuring your visitors land on the correct version of your content.
It’s especially useful for multilingual sites targeting different markets — for example, a Spanish site with separate versions for Spain, Mexico, and Argentina. With Precision Hreflang, your international SEO team can deliver the right content to the right audience.
Do I need a separate page for each language or region to use hreflang tags?
Yes. Hreflang tags work by linking different versions of the same content, each targeted at a specific language or region. For search engines to understand and serve the right version to the right user, each version must have its own unique URL.
For example, if you have an About page in English and German, you might structure your site like this:
- https://example.com/en/about-us/ – for English-speaking users
- https://example.com/de/uber-uns/ – for German-speaking users
The Precision Hreflang plugin then connects those pages using the appropriate hreflang attributes, so that search engines know they’re alternate versions of the same content.
This improves your international SEO by helping Google and others serve the correct page to users based on their language and location – reducing bounce rates and improving engagement.
Does Precision hreflang work with WPML?
WPML will have its own method of managing hreflang tags. Our Precision hreflang plugin works with multisite where you have a different language installed on each site in your network.
What happens if I change a slug whilst editing my hreflang tags?
The default behaviour is that the updated slug will be automatically updated wherever its found in your aliases. This is controlled under settings with the, “Automatically update hreflang URLs when renaming a pageSlug?” checkbox. You can untick the box if you do not want the aliases to be updated when a slug changes.
Can I set a fallback page (aka x-default) for unmatched languages?
Yes the plugin supports the x-default attribute documented here by Google. This lets you set a default for pages that redirect users based on their browser language or pages or as a fallback for pages that aren’t targeting a language.
Is the user interface translated into other languages?
The plugin ships with a formal/informal German translation. We welcome other translations using our .pot file.
